  • In the will of Colonel Vigo, he bequeathed $500 to this county to buy a bell for the Courthouse. There was a proviso that a certain claim was collected from the government for supplies furnished the destitute army of Colonel George Rogers Clark in 1778. This claim was paid to his heirs in 1884 and the amount for the bell was paid by the heirs to the county. This amount is a part of the expense of the bell that was hung in the dome of the Courthouse and bore the inscribed name of Colonel Francis Vigo.
