Named for its proximity to the Tippecanoe River and/or the War of 1812 Battle of Tippecanoe; the Commander, William H. Harrison, became the 9th President of the United States.

A Few Facts About Tippecanoe County
  • Tippecanoe County is divided into 13 Civil Townships as follows: Fairfield, Jackson, Lauramie, Perry, Randolph, Sheffield, Shelby, Tippecanoe, Union, Wabash,Washington, Wayne and Wea.
  • Tippecanoe County was formally organized March 1, 1826. 
  • Lafayette is the County Seat. It was lied out in 1825 by William Digby and is situated near the center of the county on the east bank of the Wabash. According to the United States Census of 1910, it was the only incorporated city in the county. 
  • Amelia Earhart was a "visiting faculty member: with the title of consultant on women's careers at Purdue University. In fact, the beautiful Lockheed 10-E Electra she flew into history was provided by the Purdue Research Foundation and at the conclusion of her proposed round-the-world flight would have been returned to Purdue for exhibit. ³
  • According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1830.
  • Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Tippecanoe County start with the prefix 79 because it is the seventy-ninth county in alphabetical listing.
