Named for War of 1812 hero, Captain Spier Spencer of Harrison County, who was killed at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

A Few Facts About Spencer County
  • Spencer County is divided into 9 Civil Townships as follows: Carter, Clay, Grass, Hammond, Harrison, Huff, Jackson, Luce and Ohio.
  • Spencer County was organized by an act of the Legislature, which became effective on February 1, 1818. 
  • Rockport is the County Seat and derives its name from the hanging rock, known to boatmen at the "Lady Washington Rock." In 1849 it contained good county buildings, a County Seminary in which there were usually 30 students, a Methodist Church and 200 houses (only seven of which were brick) and 600 inhabitants.
  • Holiday World is the oldest theme park in the United States and over 600,000 guests visit Spencer County each year to enjoy the rides and water park. -- Thanks to Ray Kaetzel
  • According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1825.
  • Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Spencer County start with the prefix 74 because it is the seventy-fourth county in alphabetical listing.
