A Few Facts About Putnam County
  • Putnam County is divided into 13 Civil Townships as follows: Clinton, Cloverdale, Floyd, Franklin, Greencastle, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Russell, Warren and Washington.
  • Putnam County was organized April 1, 1822. 
  • Greencastle is the County Seat. The town was named at the suggestion of Ephraim Dukes, one of the donors of the land on which this County Seat was established, after Greencastle, Pennsylvania, his native town. 
  • A WWII era German "Buzz Bomb" that is on the Court House lawn is believed to the only one on public display in the United States.
  • According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1830.
  • Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Putnam County start with the prefix 67 because it is the sixty-seventh county in alphabetical listing.
