A Few Facts About Jefferson County
  • Jefferson County is divided into 10 Civil Townships as follows: Graham, Hanover, Lancaster, Madison, Milton, Monroe, Republican, Saluda, Shelby and Smyrna.
  • Jefferson County was authorized by an act of the Legislature November 23, 1810, and went into effect February 1, 1811. 
  • Ex-soldiers of George Rogers Clark's command formed the nucleus of the pioneers of Jefferson County. 
  • Madison is the County Seat. 
  • According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1825.
  • Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Jefferson County start with the prefix 39 because it is the thirty-ninth county in alphabetical listing.
