Named for General Andrew Jackson, hero of the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 later becoming the 7th President of the United States.

A Few Facts About Jackson County
  • Jackson County is divided into 12 Civil Townships as follows: Brownstown, Carr, Driftwood, Grassy Fork, Hamilton, Jackson, Owen, Pershing, Redding, Salt Creek, Vernon and Washington.
  • Jackson County was organized January 1, 1816.
  • Jackson County was the fourteenth to be organized in the Territory of Indiana and was formed form Washington and Jefferson counties, the legislative act having been passed December 18, 1815.
  • Brownstown wasn't always the County Seat.
    • The first County Seat was established at Vallonia in June of 1816. The first courts were held in the shade of the old fort in the village.
    • Brownstown established and became the County Seat November 1816; by it 1849 contained a Court House, County Seminary and public offices of brick, seventy dwelling houses and a population of 400. The first settlers were A. C. Craig, Charles Crabb, William Williams, William Congleton, William Crenshaw, John Milroy and John Ketcham.

  • Seymour had the first commercial chewing gum factory in this country. Asa M. Fitch invented "Fitch's Chewing Gum" in 1876; popular in Central Indiana, the factory was located at Cincinnati Avenue near what is now know as O'Brien Street.
  • In 1866 the Reno Gang, led by brothers Frank, Simeon, and William, perpetrated  the world's first train robbery just east of Seymour.
  • According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1825.
  • Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Jackson County start with the prefix 36 because it is the thirty-sixth county in alphabetical listing.
