The 1849 Indiana
Gazetter indicated that Brookville received its name from original
proprietor Jesse Brook Thomas. While the essence of the notation was true,
Jesse's middle name was actually Burgess
he chose to use his grandmother's
maiden name for the town (Mary Brooke) through which connection the family
traced their linage back to Lord Baltimore. Special thanks to Matthew W.
Hall for providing these details as documented in Reifel's History of
Franklin County, Indiana, p. 193, and the Maryland Genealogical Society
Bulletin, Volume 1-38; Vol. 4, No. 2, April 1963, Queries, p. 14; and
others.
