A Few Facts About Franklin County
  • Franklin County is divided into 13 Civil Townships as follows: Bath, Blooming Grove, Brookville, Butler, Fairfield, Highland, Laurel, Metamora, Posey, Ray, Salt Creek, Springfield and Whitewater
  • Franklin County was made effective February 1, 1811.
  • Franklin County was the sixth county formed and was taken from Dearborn and Clark Counties in conformity with the legislative act of November 27, 1810. The additional organization of Fayette and Union counties in 1819 and 1821 greatly reduced the area of Franklin County.
  • Brookville is the County Seat and was first settled in 1804 by Lismund Bayse, James Knight, Robert Breckenridge, John Test and Amos Butler. By 1849 it had a population of about 1,200.
  • The 1849 Indiana Gazetter indicated that Brookville received its name from original proprietor Jesse Brook Thomas. While the essence of the notation was true, Jesse's middle name was actually Burgess … he chose to use his grandmother's maiden name for the town (Mary Brooke) through which connection the family traced their linage back to Lord Baltimore. Special thanks to Matthew W. Hall for providing these details as documented in Reifel's History of Franklin County, Indiana, p. 193, and the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin, Volume 1-38; Vol. 4, No. 2, April 1963, Queries, p. 14; and others.
  • According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1825.
  • Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Franklin County start with the prefix 24 because it is the twenty-forth county in alphabetical listing.
