At the settling of Delaware County, the Federal Government had made a provision
to reserve 1/36th of each township to be given in perpetuity for school purposes.
The Indiana State Legislature generally passed all sections numbered 16 into
the hands of officials whose duty it became to rent, sell, or otherwise dispose
of these sections for the benefit of the schools of the respective townships
in which they were located. This explanation accounts for the absence of
BLM records for Section 16. |
