Info.

Actually, there have been 4 covered bridges built on this site where County Road 700 West crosses the Eel River in Sections 35/36, Township 29 North, and Range 5 East, on the north edge of Roann, Wabash County.

The first Roann Covered Bridge, built in 1841 and lost about 1845, was listed in the World Guide as #14-85-10; the second structure, built in 1845 and lost in 1858, was listed in the World Guide as #14-85-11; the third Roann Covered Bridge, built in about 1858 and lost in 1871, was listed in the World Guide as #14-85-12 (all three World Guide identifiers according to G. Gould's 1977 list).

The current Roann Covered Bridge is a double span Howe Truss structure with a length of 288 feet, or 312 feet including the 12-foot overhang at each end, is 16 feet wide and 18 feet high. Built in 1872 by the Smith Bridge Company, the main road bypassed this structure, however, it is still open to traffic. In 1992 the Limberlost Construction Company finished a complete renovation which included a sprinkler system, there being only two other bridges in Indiana thus equipped. Though no historical marker is present, the current Roann Covered Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. This bridge was listed as #14-85-13 in the World Guide (according to G. Gould's 1977 list); however, it is currently listed as 14-85-01 in the 1989 World Guide.
