NEWPORT COVERED BRIDGE

The Newport Covered Bridge, also known as the Morehead Covered Bridge, crosses the Little Vermillion River on County Road 50 North, just west of State Road 63, in Vermillion County. This single span Burr Arch Truss structure has a length of 180 feet, or 206 feet including the 13-foot overhang at each end, with a portal clearance 16 feet wide by 14 feet high. Built in 1885 by Joseph J. Daniels, though no historical marker is present, The Newport Covered Bridge was listed in 1994 on the National Register of Historic Places. The Newport Covered Bridge is listed in the 1989 "World Guide to Covered Bridges," published by The National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, Inc., as 14-83-04. The structure was previously identified as "ea" by the Covered Timber Bridge Commission of 1938, and it is located in Sections 27 and 28, Township 17 North, and Range 9 West, about 1 mile west of Newport.
