CORNSTALK COVERED BRIDGE

The Cornstalk Covered Bridge crosses Cornstalk Creek on County Road 1350 North in Putnam County. This single span Burr Arch Truss structure has a length of 82 feet, or 98 feet including the 8-foot overhang at each end, with a portal clearance 14 feet wide by 16 feet high. The Creek, and therefore the bridge, are named for Peter Cornstalk who was Chief of the Eel River Tribe of the Miami Indians who inhabited this region peaceably for many years. Built in 1917 by Joseph A. Britton, the Cornstalk Covered Bridge was listed as #14-67-01 in the in the 1989 World Guide ... in the February 1941 "Indiana History Bulletin" Robert B. Yule and Richard C. Smith assigned the designation "bd" to this Covered Timber Bridge located in Section 5, Township 16 North, and Range 4 West, about 1-1/2 miles east of Raccoon.
