SIM SMITH COVERED BRIDGE

The Sim Smith Covered Bridge crosses Leatherwood Creek on County Road West 40 North at North 50 West, near Montezuma in Parke County. This single span Burr Arch Truss structure has a length of 83 feet, or 101 feet including the 9-foot overhang at each end, with a portal clearance 16 feet wide by 14 feet high; one poratal is arched while the other in cutout. Built in 1883 by Joseph A. Britton, though no historical marker is present, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Sim Smith Covered Bridge is listed in the 1989 "World Guide to Covered Bridges," published by The National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, Inc., as #14-61-14; however, the designation used by Parke County officials is #14-61-23... in the February 1938 "Indiana History Bulletin" Robert B. Yule and Richard C. Smith assigned the designation "eg" to this Covered Timber Bridge located in Section 5, Township 15 North, and Range 8 West, about 1-1/2 miles southwest of Coloma. |
