LEATHERWOOD STATION COVERED BRIDGE

The Leatherwood Station Covered Bridge originally crossed Leatherwood Creek about 2 miles southeast of West Union where North 210 West crosses Leatherwood Creek in Parke County. In the late 1970s this bridge became unsafe for public traffic and in 1981 it was moved to its present location in Billie Creek Village (down the footpath south of the farm house), where it now crosses Williams Creek. This single span Burr Arch Truss structure has a length of 72 feet, or 90 feet including the 9-foot overhang at each end, is 16 feet wide and 14 feet high. Built in 1899 by Joseph A. Britton the structure received her name from the I. D. & W. Railroad Station that was located near the original bridge site. Though no marker is present, The Leatherwood Station Covered Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Leatherwood Station Covered Bridge is listed in the 1989 "World Guide to Covered Bridges," published by The National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, Inc., as #14-61-25; Parke County officials use the same designation ... in the February 1938 "Indiana History Bulletin" Robert B. Yule and Richard C. Smith assigned the designation "pb" to this Covered Timber Bridge located in (original) Section 21, Township 16 North, and Range 8 West, about 2-1/2 miles southwest of Bloomingdale. |
