HOWARD COVERED BRIDGE

The Howard Covered Bridge is no longer standing it crossed Little Raccoon Creek in Section 10, Township 15 North, and Range 8 West, Parke County. This Burr Arch Truss structure had a unique portal with a rounded top facade that made it look very much like a small barn although the physical roof was of traditional design. There is a some confusion regarding the construction of this structure, which has been explained by the 1913 postcard on this site. The Howard Covered Bridge was built by Henry Wolf in 1859 (Robert Yule apparently believed this structure was built in 1849) and then rebuilt in 1909 most likely by Joseph A. Britton; it was finally lost in 1931 or 1932. George Gould identified a World Guide number of 14-61-44 for the Howard Covered Bridge in his book "Indiana Covered Bridges Thru the Years," published in 1977 by the Indiana Covered Bridge Society, Inc. Robert Yule differed in location information as well placing its locating in Range 7 West on State Road 36; the same postcard that confirmed the builder also noted the location as having been near the State Tuberculosis Hospital, which makes Yule's assertion more likely ... further research is necessary to confirm the location of this structure. |
