COAL CREEK COVERED BRIDGES

Actually, there were 2 structures known as the Coal Creek Covered Bridge, neither of which is standing. The last standing Coal Creek Covered Bridge (sometimes called the Lodi Covered Bridge) crossed Coal Creek on County Road 790 West in Parke County. This single span Burr Arch Truss structure had a length of 170 feet, or 194 feet including the 12-foot overhang at each end, with portals that were 16 feet wide by 13 feet high. Built in 1869 by Joseph J. Daniels, the Coal Creek Covered Bridge was lost sometime after 1989. Coal Creek Covered Bridge is listed in the 1989 "World Guide to Covered Bridges," published by The National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, Inc., as #14-61-30; however, the designation used by Parke County officials was #14-61-33 ... in the February 1938 "Indiana History Bulletin" Robert B. Yule and Richard C. Smith assigned the designation "rb" to this Covered Timber Bridge located in Sections 2, Township 17 North, and Range 9 West, at Lodi, 1/2 a mile south of Silverwood. Another Coal Creek Covered Bridge was built by James Myers in 1878 approximately 100 yards downstream from its predecessor and the date of its demise is unknown. George Gould identified a World Guide number of 14-61-50 for this. Both Coal Creek Covered Bridges were were within 100 yards of the location where the Wabash & Erie Canal crossed Coal Creek. There is another covered bridge that was possibly in this location and more information can be found about this structure in the information for the Lodi Covered Bridge. |
