The Wingate Covered Bridge, also known as the Coal Creek
Covered Bridge, is no longer standing
it crossed the North Fork of
Coal Creek in Sections 2 and 3, Township 20 North, and Range 6 West, north
of Wingate, Montgomery County. This single span Howe Truss structure had
a length of 80 feet and was built in 1886 by Isaac Meharry. The October 1976
Indiana Covered Bridge Society Newsletter provides information from Clair
Meharry, a great nephew of Isaac. Mr. Meharry recalls that a worker on the
bridge stopped to remove his hat and bow his head when a funeral procession
went by and was promptly fired from his job for stopping work. Mr. Meharry
also remembered that his Aunt Annie Meharry was the last person to cross
the old covered bridge before it was torn down and the first to cross the
new structure. The Wingate Covered Bridge was listed as #14-54-06 in the
World Guide (according to G. Gould's 1977 list) and removed in 1937.
