The announcement came in May of 2003 ... Monroe County will soon have a covered bridge!!! The Cedar Ford Covered Bridge, originally from Shelby County, will be replacing the McMillan Covered Bridges on Old Maple Grove Road, which was lost in 1976. Federal funds in the amount of $550,000, coupled with a national historic bridge preservation grant of $120,000, will make this a reality! Cedar Ford Covered Bridge originally crossed Little Blue River on or near where East German Road intersects and cross the Little Blue River, just northeast of Shelbyville, Shelby County. When restored this single span Burr Arch Truss structure will have a length of 127 feet, or 141 feet including the 7-foot overhang at each end, will be 15 feet 6 inches wide and 13 feet high. The Kennedy Brothers built the bridge in 1885 and, in January of 1975 at a cost of $11,000, it was moved to the fairgrounds where it was reassembled; sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s the structure was dismantled and has been stored on Fairground property since.
