The Gosport Covered Bridge is no longer standing
originally crossing the West Fork of the White River just east of Gosport,
after North Street curves down along the river, this structure would have
connected North Moon Road in Monroe County to Gosport in Owen County.
Constructed as a triple span Smith Truss structure, it was probably more
than 400 feet in length, 16 feet wide and 13 feet high. In about 1890 one
of the spans was replaced by an open steel structure where it crossed the
railroad as a safety measure, thus leaving only 2 wooden spans that had a
length of 339 feet, or 349 feet including the 10-foot overhang at the south
end. Built by the Smith Bridge Company in 1870, the bridge was lost sometime
between 1947 and 1969.
