The Walnut Street Covered Bridge is no longer standing
it crossed the West Fork of the White River in Sections 9 and 10,
Township 20 North, and Range 10 East, Delaware County. Little is known about
the covered bridges in Delaware County, however, George Gould relates the
boyhood recollections of Lloyd U. Zimmerman, who lived across from the bridge
in the Orphans Home (where his mother was matron) and noted that the structure
was only wide enough for one vehicle and, when a farmer with a larger than
normal load of hay came to the opening, he had to turn around and go over
to the Wheeling Pike Covered Bridge. Zimmerman also said that cattle would
not go through the bridge but would "slip down the side of the bank and swim
or wade over the river, however, horses and hogs would go through alright."
The Walnut Street Covered Bridge was listed as #14-18-01 in the World Guide
(according to G. Gould's 1977 list) and the date of its demise is unknown.
