The Poland Beach Covered Bridge is no longer standing
it was on State Road 42 and spanned the Eel River in Sections 29 and
32, Township 12 North, Range 5 West, Clay County. This Burr Arch Truss structure
had a length of 160 feet and was built in about 1872. Granville C. Thompson,
who was the State Highway Commissioner Project Engineer of the replacement
structure, believed its lumber was cut near Poland, the rings having been
cut from two trees, the rafters, roof sheeting, post over abutments and lower
chords were all white oak; the remainder was of yellow poplar, while the
stone abutments were quarried about a mile southwest of the structure. Listed
in the World Guide as #01-14-11 (according to G. Gould's 1977 list), the
Poland Beach Covered Bridge was removed in April 1938.
