The Carrollton Covered Bridge is no longer standing
it crossed the Wabash River in Section 4, Township 25 North, and Range 2
West, Carroll County, where a towpath for animals was attached to it. This
allowed for the change of the Wabash & Erie Canal from north to south,
or east bank of the river. According to George Gould, the transfer of boats
from the east was accomplished by opening a canal lock at the river's edge,
thus permitting the boat to float on the slack water behind the Pittsburg
Dam. Then near the dam the canal started again on its way to Lafayette. This
structure had a length of about 600 feet with a single draw span and was
built in 1839 by Samuel Greenup at a cost of $25,750. The draw span was little
used as only one steamer attempted the river passage to Logansport; it got
stuck on the rocks below that city. The Carrollton Covered Bridge was listed
as #14-08-05 in the World Guide (according to G. Gould's 1977 list) and lost
in 1873.
