The Lancaster Covered Bridge, also known as the Beard Covered Bridge, crosses the North Fork of the Wild Cat Creek on County Road 500 West, Section 2, Township 23 North, and Range 2 West, just east of Owasco, Carroll County. This single span Howe Truss structure has a length of 133 feet, or 145 feet including the 6-foot overhang at each end, with a portal clearance 16 feet wide by 12 foot 6 inches high. Erected on this site by the Wheelock Bridge Company in 1872 after first being assembled at Toledo. Of additional interest, the Adams Mill Covered Bridge utilizes unique wrought iron abutments that were patented by Wheelock. The structure was named for an early settlement that has long since passed from memory, although its namesake survives and is listed as #14-08-02 in the 1989 World Guide. Dan Reitmeyer, of CLR, Inc., (www.workingbridges.net) was responsible for the restoration of this old landmark (late 2005-October 2006) and has been kind enough to post a Blog where he shows the progress of the restoration and some interesting historical finds regarding the maintenance this structure received in the past ... the address is www.clrconstruction.blogspot.com
