Common Questions
Q. Why do you charge an access fee for some information?
A. If you are asking this question, I probably need to reiterate that this site is the effort of a single individual, in other words, there isn't a large organization or grant money sponsoring this project ... the fees simply help cover the expense and the cost of procuring rare documents and old images along with the actual cost of making the site available; these have far exceeded memberships and I tell friends and family this a "not making any profit" organization. Then there is the amount of time I spend ... as of May 2004 I've invested more than 8000 hours into this project, which is the same as sitting at my computer 24 hours a day without sleeping for an entire year!!!
Q. What information will I find when using the Search Feature?
A. The purpose of the search feature is to give members a way to quickly scan all documents that have been posted! This is a case of what you see is what you get, in other words, everything is listed in the menu bars. You may be able to find birth, death and other census related information in a biography, however, census information is not one of the items listed in the menu because the site doesn't have a complete list posted. The value of the search is the ability to look in places you might not normally go, for example, you may not know that a sister of your great great grandfather married a Mr. Xyz, however, in his biography there is an extensive story about his wife and her family, which is in fact information you want to know ... the only other way to locate this information would be to read every biography posted!
Q. Will I be able to search other counties?
A. Yes! Members will be able to search all 92 counties as well as all the "Other CHPS Features."
Q. Why don't any choices appear when I search?
A. Perhaps the word(s) you chose are not yet included in any document. To make sure the Search Feature is functioning correctly enter the word TEST in the "Text to Search For" box with  the selection Insensitive as well and AND then perform a search ... if this doesn't produce results e-mail us immediately so we can fix whatever is wrong with the system. If you did get results using "test" for your choice, try the "multiple county search" selection to look over a wider area.
Q. Why aren't the words I searched for listed in the results but lots of others are?
A. Remember this is an EVERY WORD Search ... the results show only the title of the page and not the contents. You'll need to open the document and use the features of your browser to search the text or, if you're not familiar with how that works, just read the document.
Q. When I read through the document why don't I find the word I searched for?
A. This is where the Case and Boolean choices become helpful ... take for example the word TEST. If my "Text to Search For" was the word "test," documents that have any form of this word will appear, such as testate ... adding additional words and using the AND feature, you could look for both "test" AND "marion" to eliminate many choices.
